Water

The great ship is afloat on a sea of pixels. Water has traditionally been difficult in computer animation, due to the complexity of reflection and refraction of light, transparency, water's fluid properties, and how objects and wind interact with it. Also, viewers are so familiar with how the ocean really looks that they're tough to fool. "Titanic" software developers spent several months customizing software before they could even begin to create the ocean. But the boat wakes and white water were actually filmed at sea and in a tank, and these photographic elements were added to the shot.
