Wanted -- Butch and Sundance

Ideas from Teachers

(Gr. 9-12)
I use NOVA's "Wanted: Butch and Sundance" program for either introducing genetics and/or the scientific method. It is ideal for introducing the idea of how scientists work because students see real scientists, like Clyde Snow; they love him, solving a problem. The best thing is their hypothesis is wrong. I stop the program right before they go to the DNA testing and have the students defend their position on the bones etc. and then show the rest. This also an excellent example of how people and scientists can be lead into believing something based on circumstancial evidence.
