Objective
To aid student understanding of Vikings and their daily life by having students write an essay intended to inform, persuade, or entertain.

Materials

  • NOVA's "Vikings in America" program
  • six-trait scoring guide
  • writing materials

Procedure
Students choose an essay category and produce a five-paragraph essay related to Vikings, using the video as an informational tool. Possible essay topics include:

Persuasive: Were the Vikings a barbaric people, or are they misunderstood adventurers? Convince your reader of your opinion.

Expositive: Describe daily life for Vikings. Include information on farming, sea travel, and other aspects of daily living.

Imaginative: Create a diary entry from the point-of-view of a Viking on a voyage to America.

Assessment
Score papers using six-trait scoring guide, which scores on the following qualities:
1-Ideas
2-Organization
3-Voice
4-Word Choice
5-Sentence Fluency
6-Conventions (mechanical correctness)
