To gain an understanding of the rigors of becoming a doctor.
Materials
- NOVA's "MD -- The Making of a Doctor" program
Procedure
This is an assignment in a Health Occupations program. Students watch the video over a period of four days, leaving enough time to discuss what they have seen. Then they write a paper in which they are asked to:
- Describe the qualities needed to be successful both in medical school and a residency program.
- Describe the emotional aspects of this time.
- Discuss what you feel would be the most difficult part about medical school and residency.
- Explain the time commitment involved in this process.
- Choose the person you feel made the best choice and will make the best doctor.
- Discuss what stands out in your mind the most about this video.
Assessment
The paper is worth 100 points. The grading rubric includes:
A = excellent, clearly written, good details and examples, higher level vocabulary and writing skills, exhibits depth of understanding
B = above average, good writing techniques, use of some higher level writing skills and vocabulary, some details and examples given, show understanding of overall content
C = average, writing skills at the appropriate high school level, use of multiple syllable words throughout the paper, some details and examples given, only minor grammatical or spelling errors, shows understanding of basic concepts
D = poor writing structure, multiple grammar and/or spelling errors, lacks depth, no details or examples, simplistic writing, does not show an understanding of the content
Classroom Tips
The class is an introduction to health occupations in which student investigate health care careers they are interested in. I have many students that have no idea of the education requirements to become a physician. Sent in by Kathy Temple Williamsport Area High School Williamsport, PA
