(Gr. 7-12) We have alien (to our students) worlds right here on our planet. Being a marine biology teacher, I am interested in what interests my students. We just finished a unit on the Titanic and now we are entering the world of the giant squid, Architheuthis dux. The Peter Benchley novel, The Beast, was a springboard and some current National Geographic special on TV. Now we are into aliens and I have my class studying plankton samples I collect (you can use both marine and freshwater samples) and the students are experiencing an alien world of life right here on our own planet. They love it! We also have a Plankton Key and are trying to identify some of these copepods, diatoms, and other "beasties." NOVA's "Hunt for Alien Worlds"
program was a springboard for this! There is a great interesting world out there that can be brought back into your classrooms with just a little preparation. Please e-mail me if you are interested in learning more. Sent in by Hank Binger Carle Place High School aly1dar@aol.com
(Gr. 9-12) We are looking for good, interactive Web sites to use as supplements to our regular material. Thus far we are missing really good sites on human biology and on astronomy. Our students are all high-school-aged. Please e-mail me any suggestions. Sent in by Brian Daly Humanities and Sciences Institute bfdaly@hotmail.com
