The astronomers in NOVA's "Runaway Universe"
program are using spectroscopy to identify various features of the cosmos. We've already seen flame tests of various elements and have viewed line spectra of some. The spectroscopic examination of the plates made by the giant telescopes introduces the utility of the process in rational analysis of a current problem. This reinforces the connection between the lab exercise and the real world of science. Additionally, the problem examined in the program is a stimulus to class discussion of cosmology. Sent in by
