(Gr. 8-9) We have incorporated NOVA's "Search for a Safe Cigarette" program into a cross-curricular plan that includes material from the history of tobacco to the economics involved with the industry (math). The school nurse came in with American Lung Association data. In our science class we dissected cigarettes and isolated tars/acids and smoke with bellows made from 2-liter soda bottles fitted with coffee filters. Since we light the cigarettes this works best as an outdoor lab. Guaranteed no one will ever smoke after dissecting a cigarette and testing the gross stuff that comes with it!
