Ideas from Teachers

(Gr. 9-12) I use the example of bowerbird art from NOVA's "Flying Casanovas" program with my senior history and humanities class. I prompt reactions to elephant art without revealing the "artist" and discuss the meaning and origin of art. I draw examples from internet sources, NOVA, and particularly from the ideas of Jared Diamond's book, The Third Chimpanzee, Chapter 9, "Animal Origins of Art." Students generally find this information fascinating and thought-provoking. Editor's note: To read what other people think about bowerbird art, see the "Are Bowers Art?" feature on the NOVA Web Site.
