The Lighthouse of Alexandria, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World,
guided sailors in the Mediterranean Sea for 16 centuries. A series of
earthquakes between the fourth and 14th centuries destroyed the Lighthouse. Some
archeologists believe the ruins may have toppled into the harbor near Fort
Qaitbey, Alexandria, Egypt. Concerned that a concrete breakwater being
constructed in the harbor will destroy what remains, archeologists appealed to
the government for permission to map the underwater landscape. NOVA follows an
international team of archeologists, cartographers, topographers, and divers
as they catalog and map thousands of previously inaccessible ancient
artifacts.
