FRONTLINE was honored this week with awards from the Overseas Press Club and the Society of Professional Journalists for investigations into campaign finance, the Afghan drug trade, the 2008 Mumbai terror attack and the AIDS epidemic among African Americans.
The Overseas Press Club of America named Opium Brides the winner of its 2012 award for “Best International Reporting in the Broadcast Media Showing a Concern for the Human Condition.” The judges wrote that “what set the entry apart was the way it ventured into the remote Afghan countryside to show the plight of individual families and their children, as they weighed up the demands of the traffickers and then succumbed to them. Brave, beautifully shot and paced, this entry was sensitive in its handling of a tragic human dilemma and harrowing in its impact.”
The OPC also awarded its prize for “Best Multimedia News Presentation” to FRONTLINE for the interactive film, A Perfect Terrorist: David Coleman Headley’s Web of Betrayal, which the group said was “unlike any other project submitted for this year’s awards.” The film “combines an excellent narrative with a compelling presentation that includes raw simplicity and sophisticated technology, pointing the way to a truly new form of multimedia storytelling.”
Separately, FRONTLINE won two Sigma Delta Chi awards from the Society of Professional Journalists: Endgame: AIDS in Black America won the award for “Public Service in Television Journalism,” and the website for Big Sky, Big Money was honored with the online award for “Investigative Reporting (Affiliated).”
