George Mitchell was hired by the tobacco industry to help them negotiate a national settlement. His name alone carries a great deal of clout, and he was able to convince Moore, Myers and others that the tobacco industry was serious and ready to negotiate on an honest and fair basis. His intervention was minimal beyond that, but he helped get the major players seated at the table.
