How will we understand and treat depression in the future?

DR. RICHARD FRIEDMAN: It's gonna look very personalized and genetically individualized, I think. We're gonna be able to characterize and really get to know people on an individual DNA basis and find out what kind of variations do they have that might play a role in their mental illness like depression. What are the biological problems, exactly? Where are they? What genes do they involve? What neurotransmitters are affected by these genetic variations? And what drugs do we need to be thinking about to help make them feel better?
