You Can Teach an Old Dog New Tricks

Most recently, say, the last two weeks, my dog Skippy has learned how to swim in water that is over his head. He has liked the water since he was a pup after he accidentally fell into a lily pond while chasing a duck. Since that time he has always loved to wade in water that touches his stomach, however, he never would go into water that went past that stomach part.

I'm really not sure how it happened, but Skippy will swim (the Dog paddle) into water over his head if you throw a stick or ball out for him. There are several possible explanations as to why he has just started to swim after 7 years, howeverk, I feel that Skippy is going through a mental growth spurt which has enhanced his confidence allowing him to swim freely without being anxious or hesitant. Since Skippy is about 7 years old - this must prove that you can teach an old dog new tricks.
