The saying “All Good Things Must Come To An End” has a special meaning as I write this article. After over 25 years of faithful service to WLAE, Doug Curry, our Chief Engineer, retired in December leaving big shoes to fill. Doug was with WLAE since the early days and was instrumental in the building of our tower and transmitter site in Chalmette and the construction of the television studio at the Notre Dame Seminary. Doug also played a pivotal role in the 1987 visit of Pope John Paul II as one of the technical coordinators of the television pool feed coverage for all of the media outlets. When WLAE moved to our current location in the UNO Jefferson Center in the late 1990’s, Doug was the lead engineer designing and integrating the technical facility. In 2005, after Hurricane Katrina totally flooded and destroyed our transmitter building, Doug Curry was there to oversee the “Herculean” task of cleaning up and rebuilding the damaged Chalmette site. Earlier this year as we converted our broadcast signal to DTV, Doug headed the team that enabled WLAE to be one of the first television stations in New Orleans to air multi-channel streams. But I believe that Doug’s legacy will be our brand new digital master control operation, which is now nearing completion. This project started in 2001 with a multi-million dollar grant that was written by Doug and after many years of changing circumstances, starts, stops and revisions…today it is a reality. This all digital master control will take WLAE into high definition television and be a cutting edge center of operations far into the future. In 2008, we created The Doug Curry – LAE Award for leadership and excellence. Each year this award will be given to the employee who most exemplifies the qualities that Doug exhibited over his 25 years of service to WLAE. This honor is a lasting testament to a man who helped make WLAE what it is today and what it will be for many years to come – More Than Television!
Thanks Doug…you will be missed.
