WLAE Mission
WLAE is a non-profit public/private partnership, dedicated to improving our local, state, and global communities. Utilizing current and emerging technologies, we are committed to providing quality, value-based educational programs and services. We seek to inspire all of God's children to create a more enlightened and caring society.
Our History
WLAE was founded in 1982 when it was awarded a construction permit by the FCC to build an Educational Public Television station in the New Orleans community. The station began broadcasting on UHF Channel 32 in July 1984, and was licensed in 1985. The corporate entity, Educational Broadcast Foundation, was created to provide broader and more diverse educational programming for Southeast Louisiana, and to address significant educational, cultural, and community needs through high quality local, regional and national programming. WLAE broadcasts Instructional Television Programming, Children's Educational Programming, GED, Literacy, Adult Learning College Telecourses and Parenting Programming. WLAE is also actively involved in community and school outreach projects, and serves as a resource for educational teleconferences. WLAE-TV has produced a number of award-winning documentaries and also produces a number of weekly studio productions providing a forum for both national, state and local government as well as health care information.
Board Meetings
In compliance with Section 396(k) of the Communications Act, WLAE-TV's meetings of its governing body, any committee of such governing body, or any advisory body are open to the public. The dates and times of these meetings are preceded by reasonable notice to the public. All persons permitted to attend any meeting of the board, or of any such committee or body, and no person is required, as a condition to attendance at any such meeting, to register such person's name or to provide any other information.
The board of trustees of Educational Broadcasting Foundation will meet on Tuesday, July 21, 2009 at 12:00 pm at WLAE-TV, 3330 N. Causeway Blvd, Metairie, LA. The public is invited.
Overview of Current Local Educational Initiatives
WLAE-TV is currently sponsoring for the Greater New Orleans area, two national PBS initiatives, and is working closely with area schools to expand the educational telecommunications infrastructure so that the full power and potential of PBS programming and services can be made available to all of our citizens. Ready-to-Learn, "PTV" WLAE in cooperation with Louisiana Public Broadcasting broadcasts statewide children's programming Sunday through Friday in support of the PBS's Ready-to-Learn, PTV project. The PTV project combines high quality children's educational programming rich and diverse in content with outreach support services, materials, and training for caregivers and parents. The New Orleans Educational Telecommunications Project NOETP is a partnership of WLAE, six Greater New Orleans school districts, and a local consortium of area colleges and Universities. The vision of NOETP is to build a telecommunications infrastructure utilizing cable, ITFS and the broadcast medium to address needs of the local educational institutions. NOETP has received a construction grant from the Commerce Department, and commitments of funds from the two largest school districts in Louisiana. Currently NOETP is in the process of constructing television origination classrooms at key schools in the area. These schools will have the capability of delivering programming citywide via a cable/ITFS infrastructure. New Orleans Educational Telecommunications Consortium (NOETC) WLAE-TV and eight local colleges and universities are partners in a consortium whose purpose is to promote and advance telecommunications technologies, and distance learning activities at the college level. Currently, one of these colleges is in the process of developing an Associate Degree program linked to the PBS "Going the Distance" project.
