WLAE-TV Celebrates Silver Anniversary
The summer of 2009 marks the 25th anniversary of WLAE-TV. At 11 am on July 8, 1984, PBS station WLAE Channel 32 signed on the air becoming the second voice of public television in New Orleans and offering programming that was wholesome, local, alternative and educational.
Through the years, the station has had many ups and downs. Operating in the “red” was a challenge for most of the early years. Taking the lead in the television coverage of Pope John Paul II's visit in 1987 was a definite highlight of the 1980’s. The 1990’s brought an ownership change as the Willwoods Community and Louisiana Public Broadcasting stepped in to purchase the station from the Archdiocese of New Orleans. In this decade there were large production projects at the Olympics in Atlanta and with a series of music clubs called The House of Blues. There was even a facility move across town from the Notre Dame Seminary to our present location here on Causeway in Metairie. Moving an entire studio & production operation, master control and satellite dishes was no easy task, but when the switch was flipped at the new facility, everything worked and WLAE continued onward serving the viewers of our area.
The new millennium brought many successes in the forms of locally produced programming in the areas of health, business, sports and religion. But it would all come to a crashing halt in 2005 as Hurricane Katrina roared ashore and destroyed the transmitter site in Chalmette and reeked havoc on our Causeway offices and studio. But the staff of WLAE did not abandon the ship, nor did we wait to be bailed out. From this terrible tragedy we banded together and found a new meaning and new purpose for WLAE. We rebuilt, we restored and we re-branded ourselves to become a much better television station. Today, I am extremely proud of our entire staff and all that we have accomplished and look forward to a brighter future...a future that includes multiple digital broadcast streams, web channels, video on demand and much more.
I would like to thank our dedicated members, volunteers and boards for their support over the last quarter century. Many of you have been around since the early days and your advice, guidance, direction and prayers have helped to make WLAE the station that it is today.
So, this year should be a happy anniversary for WLAE…we survived…and continue to thrive…at the age of 25.
Happy Viewing!
