Chautauqua: An American Narrative
Chautauqua has always had a strong focus on the arts and on education. Today the arts are at the heart of the Chautauqua experience. According to Vice President of Programming Marty Merkley, "At Chautauqua you walk outside your door and the next-door neighbor is practicing their music, you take a walk anywhere on the grounds and you experience the creative process of art being made."

Chautauqua's commitment to the arts goes beyond just performance and appreciation. The institution has a long-standing commitment to arts education and fostering the next generation of young artists. From dance to theater to voice programs, Chautauqua provides opportunities for all kinds of young artists. Many of these programs are elite and are designed to help young artists and performers transition from their lives as students to that of professional artists.

Chautauqua offers opportunities for young artists through the Chautauqua School of Art, the School of Dance, Chautauqua Theater Company, Instrumental Program, Piano Program, Opera Company, and Voice Program. Each of these departments combines study and instruction from the Chautauqua arts faculty with live public performances and master classes with internationally renowned visiting and guest artists.

One of the greatest benefits to young artists at Chautauqua is the ability to meet and work with artists in other disciplines. Through performances, lectures, and other activities, artists experience many forms of art other than their own and meet their peers in other arts programs.
