Vergennes Shipyard Monuments

Vergennes, Vermont 05491
(802) 877-2841 (Vergennes Visitors Information, City Clerk's Office)

During the War of 1812, Lieutenant Thomas Macdonough was given the seemingly impossible task of building a fleet that could protect American ports and military facilities on Lake Champlain. Instead of working in established shipbuilding ports along the lake, he chose Vergennes Falls on Otter Creek since it was located seven miles inland and would not be vulnerable to British raids. The USS Saratoga, a brig, and USS Ticonderoga, a schooner, were the largest of the ships built here. A plaque placed at the water’s edge in a small park on Macdonough Drive describes the work done here. A boulder with plaque attached located near the falls marks the site of the shipyard. In a public park bordered by Vergennes’ North, Greene, Main, and Park Streets is a monument commemorating the service of the Lake Champlain fleet and its 1814 victory over the British in Plattsburgh Bay.

Fort Wellington

370 Vankoughnet St.
Prescott, Ontario K0E 1T0
(613) 925-2896

At Fort Wellington in Prescott, Ontario, across the St. Lawrence from Ogdensburg, a provincial plaque describes the battle from the Canadian point of view. Consisting primarily of earthworks and timber palisades, Fort Wellington played an important role in the war by serving as an obstacle to American movements along the river. The fort has been meticulously restored and is now a popular destination for travelers interested in Canadian history and the War of 1812. Located beside the river on VanKoughnet Street, Fort Wellington National Historic Park is open daily from Victoria Day in mid-May through September 6.
