According to our oral history a family of our ancestors were traveling in a wagon, and a group of soldiers stopped them and asked if they were "indians." One of the younger members was starting to say yes, and an older member spoke up and said, "we are colored people." This being said, because of the fear of being moved to the west, I have been raised thinking that we are Native American, and have been able to trace my family back to the mid-1700's, mainly because they married Europeans. On the first US Census, our people were listed as White, after 1800, the same people were listed as Mulatto. A few years ago I had to have jaw surgery and the doctor wrote American Indian Skeletal on my paperwork without asking my ancestry. So I believe I do have Native American blood.
