TELLER'S PLACE OF ORIGIN: Alsace Lorraine, France HOW HEARD: Grandparents, Russian Germans

Slavery didn't just start or end in Africa. Slavery has been around in Asia and Europe as well. My great grandparents and grandparents were slaves in Russia when the Kremlin took over the Czar. Fortunately, a sad love story involved with a happy ending when my grandfather met my grandmother and helped her and her parents escape. They found themselves first in Germany and later in America when after thinking her son from a pervious marriage was dead, my uncle showed up on my grandmother's doorstep. He convinced her to move to America. Now you know how I came to be here.

My grandfather loved to tell the story to his coworkers at the plant where he worked in Illinois. He said they would make fun of his accent, and then one day he became angry and told them his story. From then on, he said, they called him "brother."
