One Families Story: Read a story matching the term you chose:
STORYTELLER: My mother LOCATION: Centralia, Illinois YEAR TOOK PLACE:
TELLER'S PLACE OF ORIGIN: HOW HEARD:

Well, it seems that my mother's father walked away from the family. She and her brother were separated at her brother's birth (her mother died giving birth). They re-united later in life during World War II (he had enlisted). But his family has disappeared. There is no knowledge of my grandfather or mother on her side of the family.

My father is alive and came from a big family. We, my sister and I, have never met or been introduced to them. Before my mother passed, we received correspondence from a niece/cousin. But afterwards there has been no contact whatsoever.

Now what is left of my family is just my three sisters and myself and our children. There is no legacy that has been passed on to us. We don't know any background to our family. There is nothing there to keep us united. It seems that slavery has had an devastating affect on my family even here in the year 2006.
