Henry Louis Gates should not be so confused about his ancestor named Redman. Most likely the term Red-man came from Red-Negro: a mulatto with African features but with light skin reddened by the sun. Since the slaves and slave masters in Guyana/ West Indies and the US came from the same places in Africa and Europe, respectively, the tendency to use certain nomenclature would be similiar.
