My grandfather was Andrew Jackson Smith of the 55th Massachusette colored volunteers company B. He was a runaway slave who fell in with the 41st Illinois. He was in the battle of Shiloh as a servant. Later he was enrolled in the 55th Mass. He saved the Flag at the battle of Honey Hill, South Carolina. He was the Last Medal Of Honor receipent in the Civil War. The Most delayed Medal in US history January 16,2001. My aunt Caruth Smith Washington save much of the material that we use to secure the Medal. We believe that she is the last direct Desendent of a slave in this County. She lives in New Jersey. It took more than twelve years of research and communicating with the US Army to prove our case.
