My cousin, Robert Holden, told the story at family gatherings. As the family settled in Raleigh, NC 1865 He is originally from Raleigh, NC Family story passed down - substantiated by the Family Bible

At the end of slavery, my maternal grandfather's family walked from somewhere south of Raleigh - between South Carolina and Wilmington, NC. They had a family name of Walker (Cousin Robert said it was because they walked from the old plantation (unknown) to Raleigh, NC). When they arrived in Raleigh, they changed their name to Holden because the Governor's last name was Holden and they thought it would give them some notoriety in their new home. My grandparents' names were Amanda and Charles Holden. There were two boys, Robert and Charles and three girls, Amanda, Arlena and Easter.
