My great-grandmother, Mary Elizabeth Fogg, was purported to be a full-blooded Cherokee. She was the mistress of, Hal Witherspoon, a wealthy white landowner. He built her a home adjacent to his with a fence surrounding the 2 homes with a gate between the 2 providing access. My great grandfather never married and together they had 6 children. One of whom was my grandmother. Mr. Witherspoon sent my grandmother and her sisters to St. Augustine's College. When Mr. Witherspoon died, he left all of his property to "his dear friend" Carrie Fogg Farrar. Carrie used the land to support her own family and sold off portions to send one of my cousins to then Hampton Institute in the 50's. The family sold off the last of property including the original house in the mid-90's.
