southern africa: traditions
Warriors Shield Beer Pots Traditional House Hair Hat

The Zulu have a long and glorious history as a nation of mighty warriors. Though their shields have now been laid aside, their powerful kingship has ensured their traditions a central place among Southern African cultures. Zulu shields, one of the group's best-known symbols, are de rigueur at museums and African art galleries. But despite the Zulu name recognition, the cultural contributions of other groups play an important role in Southern Africa, as well. Of these, the hand-painted houses of the Ndebele people of South Africa are one of the most creative.
