Diversity reigns in Africa's cities. Keith Goddard, Programs Manager for the Gay and Lesbian Association of Zimbabwe (GALZ), headquartered in Harare, shares a moment with his partner, Simba Zwangabani. There are fewer than 200 dues-paying members of gay and lesbian organizations in Zimbabwe, a country of 12 million people. Being openly homosexual can be dangerous. GALZ, founded in 1989, initially kept a low profile that provoked little public reaction. Since GALZ took on a more public role in the early 1990s, gays have come under fire from President Robert Mugabe and other officials and have been the target of occasionally violent harassment campaigns.
