1. Ask students to create an artistic rendering that
graphically depicts the sources, consequences, and possible
solutions to desertification. This may be in the form of a
poster, a skit, a poem, an essay, a song, or a drawing.
2. Visit the site at:
http://www.geographia.com/indx06.htm
to further explore different regions' culture and geography.
Ask them to look for ways in which desertification and water
management issues may impact these areas.
3. Have students read the novel Paton's Cry, the Beloved
Country. Have them keep a journal about the ways in which the
land functions in the story and what this novel says about
people's relationship with the land.
4. Students may choose to test their knowledge of African history on the
Africa Challenge section of the AFRICA Web site.
