Learning Activity Two: An Imaginary
Diary
In this activity, students will briefly research
some introductory facts about Africa and learn about the
varied music that exists in different regions.
1. Students will create ³Imaginary Diaries² in which they
will
record what they have learned about the music of varied
regions of Africa and its music. Each student should create a
cover for his or her diary.
2. Visit the following Web site of Africa Online at
http://www.africaonline.com/AfricaOnline/covermusic.html
OR
http://www.pbs.org/africa/explore
Divide the class into five groups and have each collect five
facts about the varied regions¹ music (North, South, Central,
East and West).
3. Listen to a selection of music from each of the regions by
scrolling to the bottom of each of these pages and choosing
one title.
4. Use the facts to create entries in an Imaginary Diary.
5. Divide the class into small groups and have them share
their
diary entries.
6. Have each student choose a favorite piece of the music
theyhave heard and write a brief paragraph describing why
they like it. Divide the class into pairs and share their
responses.
