As a junior high school student back in the 60s…Brooklyn, my introduction to black history took place during a very heated teachers strike. Thanks to a group of dedicated young black teachers from the South crossing the picket lines in our Brownsville school took that opportunity to teach the kids who opted to come to school during the strike our history..it was the dawning of my awareness of how strong, resilient and innovative and rich our history was. It defined how I walked through my life..how I raised my 3 children!
