Even as a toddler my mother impressed upon me how important it was in knowing my history, political environment, and education. She subscribed to Ebony, Jet, and for Christmas I received history books by Lerone Bennett, Jr. and books of poetry from Langston Hughes. We would go to family reunions in North Carolina. I was able to trace my family on both sides to the 1800s. I’m still looking for and finding great grand parents.
