I am descended from a fugitive slave who escaped from a plantation in southern Missouri in 1850 into the free state of Illinois where he was taken in by a white abolitionist and hidden from slave bounty hunters. I learned of this via my family’s oral history as told to me by my parents. I was also blessed with elementary schools, both black and white, that were not afraid of the topic of African-American history.
