Eugenia Russell

The United Martin Family has traced its first African ancestor. Her slave name was Traci and she came from West Africa to SC in the 1790’s- She had a daughter named Katie who was born in 1802 and died in 1892. Katie had at least 7 children by her master, a planter named John Martin in Jenkinsville SC. He gave his slave children land and educated them. They built businesses and a church in Jenkinsville. In the graveyard of the church is Katie’s grave and gravestone. So you see, there are other African American families which can trace their path back to Africa. The Martin family has held a reunion almost every year since 1966. Please join on in Norfolk VA July 4th weekend to learn more.
