As a sophomore in high school, my history teacher started taking me and a few other students to the Black History Roundtable discussions once a month. She, the late Ms. Merlita Moore, was one of only 3 Black teachers that I had in my entire academic life. She was amazed at the answers when she asked the question, “Why did Lincoln free the slaves?” It was at that point she realized that we needed to know our true history.
