I am a mixed race military brat. When we returned to the US from Europe in the early 80′s I was unaware that my family was “different” or that my mother and father had had to fight to be together. The questions from my white elementary school peers led to questions at home and was the beginning of my exploration into my families’ past. My first lessons came from Mom, the Roots, then time spent with my grandmother hearing the oral history of her family. I have included a photo of my mother’s parents. He was from rural southern Ohio while she was raised on Long Island. They had dramatically different experiences and family histories.
