My parents talked us about the accomplishments of African Americans in our hometown, Grenada, MS, as well as nationally. They always told us to be proud and if those people could go great things, we could also. They made sure we spent a lot of time with our great grandmother and our grandparents. They bought us books by and about African Americans. Reading Ebony and Jet were part of our regular readings. Now I share my knowledge with my students.
