James Brown, the 'godfather of soul,' is commonly regarded as the most influential living African-American musician. His was an extraordinary trajectory from childhood to superstardom. The film explores the era of Funk that he created, ushering in a rhythmic tension that paralleled the evolution of the Civil Rights movement. His call for 'black power,' his controversial lifestyle and his temporary, but devastating, fall from the spotlight in the '70s are all explored through interviews with Brown and commentary by his closest friends, fellow musicians and celebrities. Rapper Chuck D, Al Sharpton, and Dan Aykroyd are among those who help illuminate the film's pulsating original performances and rare archival footage. The broadcast will coincide with Brown's 70th birthday and his current sold-out concert tour.
