Biography in Sound: “Meet Carl Sandburg” (1955)

It’s American Masters radio: the other AM, on the podcast dial.

For this hour, “Meet Carl Sandburg,” from NBC Radio’s Biography in Sound series. This 1955 broadcast is a documentary in sound about the poet, author, musician, and historian, Carl Sandburg: all told through readings and songs from Sandburg, as well as interviews with the people that knew him–describing him as if he were as big as Paul Bunyan.

“He talks of the American scene and in the American idiom,” says Dave Garroway, the show’s narrator, of Sandburg. “He could talk no other way.”

This is a wonderful program that goes deep into the nuances of Sandburg’s history and his popularity during the 1950’s. It’s also a great example of how rich the Univ. of Ill. archives are in Sandburg materials and media. I love hearing the first person stories of his contemporaries.
