Just to let you know that the #7 line is not receiving any stimulus money. Yes the extension will be built but the City of New York is funding the extension not the MTA or the federal government.

An Engineeer told me the money for the "shovel ready" projects was going for projects that had to be completed in 12 months. That does not seem accurate? Most large transportation project exceed 12 months to build. Can you explain the requirements for obtaining stimulus money?

With regard to bus only lanes, as on the Tappan Zee Bridge and Deegan Expressway: They belong on the outside lane, so buses can get on and off easily and not cross traffic to get to the middle of the road.

Buses on the shoulder of the Thruway from Suffern to the TZ would let the buses move faster than the cars. The bus lane can be kept free of cars with the same style cameras that are used in congestion pricing schemes. Physical barriers are no longer necessary.

Sam, you did a great job at the Rudin awards last night!

Another shovel ready project transportation planners should be advocating are HOT lanes to retrofit existing HOV lanes or adding this functionality to existing highways without HOV lanes. Although, this money will fund great high-speed rail projects especially here in the San Francisco Bay Area, we need to push projects that would benefit automobile traffic on our congested highways, and I think HOT lanes are a great way to move congestion management projects faster since they could be implemented quite fast like a BRT project. The lanes are usually already there, it's just a matter of retrofitting for the use.
