Assimilation
The orange bricks look darker with a black background and lighter when the white background is applied. With a slight change in the pattern, this illusion goes from one of color contrast to color assimilation - the complete opposite effect. Contrast and assimilation are what enable us to see millions of colors in a world with only 400 wavelengths of visible light.
