I can’t wait for this to air, this is such an inspiring and fascinating subject of inquiry.

  • ward chamberlin

In the 1920s and 30s Germany was in the forfront of this new business and entertaiment industry: film making. Then came Hitler intent on wiping out the jews who were the most talented actors/actrasses, producers and directors of that early generations of film makers. Many saw the handwriting on the wall and fled to America. This, by a fine tv producer, tells the fascinating story of how they got out and how they helped make Hollywood the film capital of the world.

  • Susan

Ward Chamberlin wrote that? Typos and all? I doubt it…

  • walter_wpg

I just finished watching this film on our local PBS station. It was AMAZING! One of the most fascinating documentaries I’ve seen in a long time, and a must-see for anyone interested in film history. Thanks so much for airing it!

  • Mike F

I just saw this film. It’s eye-opening and wonderful. So many more than the few people we all thought we knew about. A beautifully told story about a group of beautiful and talented people. Thanks so much.

  • ruth Obernbreit-Glass

A superb film depicting details not usually revealed, the cinema exiles were shown as the important stars and figures that they were as well as struggling with some of the same issues as my, very not famous, refugee parents! This was extremely well done and very interesting including footage I had not seen before…

  • Ken Stein

It wasn’t all sweetness and light / black and white for the emigres and other Jews who “made it” once they got to hollywood, as this documentary implies. And it wasn’t just the Nazis who were anti-semitic. Many emigre and non-emigre Jews in Hollywood were targeted (as Jews) by the MCCarthyites in general and J Parnell Thomas and others in particular. In the U.S. in the 1940’s and 50s, Anti-communism gave way to thinly veiled anti-Semitism. One example — saying his committee was there to protect the “Christian people of America,” HUAC member John Rankin read a list of Hollywood 10 supporters, saying, ” . . . Another one was Danny Kaye, we found out his real name was David Daniel Kaminsky. One calls himself Edward G. Robinson. His real name is Emmanuel Goldenberg. Another one here calls himself Melvyn Douglas, whose real name is Melvyn Hesselberg, etc.” I think that it was a sadly missed opportunity in this documentary to *not* talk about Fred Zinneman and High Noon being a reaction against this anti-semitic / reactionary tide, rather than just saying that High Noon was just about how a man’s character was his destiny. Sort of a cop-out.

  • matty walker

I watched last evening. Stunning documentary. Thank you!

  • David S. Levine

I watched the film in awe. PBS hit this one out of the ball park with a high degree of accuracy. Can’t wait to be able to buy the DVD.

  • Piccolo

as a teacher of film and film history this is a good and solid documentary. I wish though it had mentioned more filmmakers and the fact that the studio system in the US was founded by Russian Jewish immigrants! I would also have used the juxtiposition of Leni Riefenstahl remaining in Germany and her influence in the film world along with those who migrated. One other comment, which is a very interesting fact – so many of these exiles in the 1940s and 50s were black listed during the McCarthy Era – hmmmmm..strange!

  • Lilly Hollander

Please run this program again, I want my family to see it. or tell me where I can rent it.

It was excellent in many respects.

  • Robert Fells

I’d have to say that “Hollywood Exiles” was interesting but should have been much better. For example, too much time was spent on Billy Wilder, admittedly the most successful of the emigres, to the exclusion of relating many other people’s experiences.

Another example, Conrad Veidt is touched on, mainly to compare clips of him from CALIGARI and CASABLANCA. But omitted is when he returned to Germany in 1937 and was detained by the Nazis. Only when his UK studio threatened to make an international incident of it, was Veidt released.

Also omitted is the cautionary tale of those who did not emigrate such as French star Harry Baur. He stayed in Paris and was beaten to death by the Nazis in 1943.

The filmmakers here seemed content with showing home movies of the various celebrities with voice-overs, some authentic, some reconstructed. You’d think Henry Koster was a major Hd director from the way he was represented. One unpardonable error in the narration – Erich Korngold did NOT arrive in Hd in the fall of 1938 – that’s an historical impossibility. He arrived in ‘37. This like saying Pearl Harbor was attacked in Dec 1942.

Frankly, I found the Timeline on the “Exiles” web page more informative than the two-hour film. In sum, a fascinating topic given rather superficial treatment in this documentary. Could there be a “Hollywood Exiles II” some day? I hope so.

  • Annie Carr

This production is exceptional, and I didn’t get to see it in its entirety. I’m desperately trying to find it for sale to keep as reference. There is revealing information that has seldom been talked about. This is something that every new filmmaker should see!

  • Tom Carey

I just finished watching the last 2/3rds of this excellent documentary and hope to catch it from the beginning. It was well organized and fascinationg in profiling the lives of so many well known Hollywood figures, the backround of whom most of us here knew little. The archival and family films, some in colour were wonderful. This a “reel” must see for film buffs.5 stars.
    Tom Carey, Mississauga Ont.

  • Luwanna Reinhart

Caught the last hour lst night and want to see the whole thing. Fascinating!!! When will it be replayed?

  • Louis Halk

Beautifully done with great care. The fade-out from Conrad Veidt as Cesare in 1919 to the Nazi in Casablanca was fantastic! Bravo. In the narration German titles and personalites were correctly pronounced. This was PBS at its best.

  • Sean Chapman

For those interested, Erich Wolfgang Korngold who became famous because of his hollywood scores, his opera will be performed at the Royal Opera House 21 Jan – 17 Feb 2009 http://www.roh.org.uk/totestadt

  • Sharon Taylor-Ward

My husband and I watched this documentary on KQED and were captivated.
A dear friends mother worked in Hollywood during that time as a secretary.
She is now 94 years old. I was telling her about the film and it stirred memories for her. I would like to show her the film. Will you be showing in again, or is it available for rent?

  • Don Copple

I saw last half of program on KETC St. Louis. Will this great program be shown again?

  • Gregory Divers

Like other viewers I would like to know if this program will be shown again on KETC St. Louis.
    Thank you.

  • Eric Bloom

I only caught 2/3’s of this show but it was great. As a fan of documentaries and a student of both film and the Holocaust, this was a superb work!

  • mary lipp

Missed it, but would love to be able to purchase it or know when it’s going to be played again… fascinating subject

  • Len Rubin

I thought I knew a lot about the effect of Nazism on films, but I learned a lot more. This was wonderful, but sad.

  • Eenusch

The Toronto Jewish Film Festival will be screening this documentary on April 18th and 21st, 2010.

    Check out the website at

    http://www.tjff.com/film-info.php?id=17&sortby=date&filterby=

  • Heeathcliff Kennel

Is there any way that this program can be purchased? If so, please let me know where.

I would also like to know if Cinema’s Exiles From Hitler to Hollywood is going to be presented on PBS again?

    Fabulous piece of work!

  • michael grace

it is rather important to note that MANY of the so called GERMAN immigrants were actually AUSTRIANS (Vienna) like Erich Wolfgang Korngold, Max Steiner (both film music pioneers), Billy Wilder, Otto Preminger, Peter Lorre, .. just to name a few.

  • Victoria Grijalva

I watched this most fascinating documentary last evening! My father escaped Germany in 1941 and an aunt sponsored him then. She was a secretary to William Dieterle. My father found work at Hedi Schoop’s ceramic factory and became good friends with her. I remember being at Hedi’s home in the San Fernando Valley and listening to her stories about the people who visited. I last visited with her in 1994, shortly before she passed. My father told me all about the exodus of famous German movie people and how they worked to provide opportunity to those who came after. Many worked in Hedi’s shop. My aunt had a few letters written by Salka Viertel which I discovered among her things after she passed in 1989. She arranged a tour of the Feuchtwanger residence for us. This documentary brought to mind all the stories my father and my aunt told about a disturbing period in history.

Nice post. I was checking continuously this blog and I am inspired! Very helpful information particularly the closing section :) I deal with such information a lot. I used to be seeking this certain information for a long time. Thank you and good luck.

I am guessing that after 2 years of waiting for this to be available for purchase or at least air it again, might have something to do with getting the permissions from all the surviving familiesof the actors shown in the documentary. Perhaps they all want a percentage which may make it a non-profitable project for PBS to put to the public for purchase.
I caught only about half of this when it aired and have been searching for it since.
It is likely that with all the vintage film buffs out there, myself included, aong with my guy who is Jewish would be highly interested in this.
I keep hoping also that the film will be shown again at one of the pledge drive weeks that air 3 or 4 times a year, but no luck yet.
I am keeping my fingers crossed.

Review by Desiree E. Phillips for Tokio Hotel Poster Print, 24×36Rating: I liked this poster very much. It arrived on time and with reasonable charges. I was however, minor ticked off by it having minor scratches down the middle of the poster. But that only happens when you look at it from a certain point of view. Other then that I’m completely satisfied.

I too have been searching for this program to air again or buy on DVD. It’s April 2013 and still haven’t found it in the 5 years looking. At one point about 2 years ago I called PBS in New York they told me they didn’t have the rights to make DVDs. And the only way I’d see it again is if they ever air it again. At that time the person didn’t know when and if they would. Oh well… Any one out there with promising information let me know. Would love to see the whole of from Hitler to Hollywood as I only caught 1/2 of the program.

Hmm it looks like your website ate my first comment (it was super long) so I guess I’ll just sum it up what I submitted and say, I’m thoroughly enjoying your blog. I as well am an aspiring blog writer but I’m still new to everything. Do you have any suggestions for novice blog writers? I’d genuinely appreciate it.

Hello there! I know this is kinda off topic but I was wondering which blog platform are you using for this site? I’m getting tired of Wordpress because I’ve had problems with hackers and I’m looking at alternatives for another platform. I would be fantastic if you could point me in the direction of a good platform.
