Meet the Colonists

Photo of John Voorhees
Profile:
Name: John Voorhees
Age: 37
From: Massachusetts

John Voorhees is part Native American and grew up on a reservation. He is an Oriental rug salesman. On the Colony, he and his family represent the bulk of early colonists: skilled, middle-class adventurers seeking opportunity in a new world. John became the designated hunter and negotiator with Native Americans for trade furs.

Reflections:
"Being alone in the woods before sunup or after sundown was by far the most enjoyable time I spent on the project. I spent hours standing still in trees, often in the pouring rain, watching the animals go about their business: bounding along the branches past my head, or alighting near my hand, or scratching a dust-bath in the grass below. I tracked deer, black bear, coyote, rabbit, pheasant, moose, beaver, and porcupine. I learned how to tell fresh tracks and scat from old, and new grazing trails from abandoned ones. I found squirrel nests in hollow birches and gray crane nests up high in giant spruce trees."

1628 Profile:
As a young married couple, John and Michelle left their rural village in Worcestershire with their son Giacomo, seeking a way out of the rural poverty that gripped many English families. They moved to Bristol, the second largest city in England, and a magnet for people seeking opportunity. Unfortunately, the situation in Bristol was not much better. For a time, John served as a soldier, fighting in the wars on the continent. He then found work as a laborer, working a variety of jobs on the busy waterfront. Michelle is able to supplement their income working as a successful seamstress.

They have heard wonderful stories about America from the fishermen and sailors of Bristol who have visited there. When word spread that the Colonial House Company was seeking settlers for a new Colony, the Voorhees leapt at the opportunity. This will be their chance to own a house and land, and be prosperous farmers.
