Meet the Colonists

Photo of Don Wood
Profile:
Name: Don Wood
Age: 36
From: New York

Don Wood is a carpenter from New York City. A freeman on the Colony, he quickly became an indispensable community member in the Colony, overseeing the work force of the community's many building projects.

Reflections:
"I tried to go into the project without a lot of expectations besides the need for extremely hard work. That expectation certainly turned out to be true, but a lot of it was fun, at least for me. I think the most challenging aspect was the inability to speak to anyone who was not involved in the project. It was extremely difficult to keep things in perspective and some outside advice would have been helpful, but then again, the original colonists would have been much more isolated, so I can't complain. My greatest achievement during the project would have to be shared with the other colonists: the fact we didn't kill each other before it was over."

1628 Profile:
Don is a tradesman, a carpenter. He grew up in a village not far from Bristol, in the County of Avon near a manor house owned by Sir Ferdinando Gorges, a prominent nobleman, and major investor in the Colonial House Company. Don has been employed from time to time by Sir Ferdinando. So, when he heard villagers talking about the new Colony, he was able to secure a place, through this connection. Furthermore, Sir Ferdinando said that there would be plenty of need and opportunity for a carpenter in the Colony. Don has left his village only once before, to work as a fisherman in the seasonal Newfoundland fisheries. This will be his chance to once again go beyond the confines of his sleepy village, and get ahead in the world.
