Introductory Activity:
1) Ask your students what the primary language spoken in your school is. (English.) Ask your students if there are other languages spoken in your school. What are they? (Student answers will vary.) Ask your students if the English spoken in the United States is fairly standardized; that is, could an English-speaking person from California effectively communicate with a person from Arkansas? (Probably.) Ask your students if there are differences in the ways Americans use the English language. What are those differences? (Student answers will vary, but should include that there are regional accents, and different slang words and phrases across the country.)
