Srebrenica: UN Safe Area
. . . I was in Srebrenica then. . . . I, from Srebrenica, with my [son] Edin, my [son] Nermin, and my [husband] Ramo, through the woods, we set off and came to Konjevic Polje [in Bosnia]. They said, here a corridor for Tuzla [in Bosnia] has been opened. We came, and when we came there [to Konjevic Poljie], they said we were to return to Srebrenica. Then [United Nations Protection Force Commander, Lieutenant-General Philippe] Morillon came to Srebrenica, from Konjevic Polje, and [said] that it is a protected zone and the UNPROFOR [United Nations Protection Force soldiers] came to protect us. Then it was, you know, nice, you understand? When we returned, we could not imagine it would be like this.
I was sowing in Pecista, above Potocari, some vegetables, so that we have something to eat, [otherwise] you have nothing to eat . . . . My son Nermin, he was in the hospital, and in his release papers, he was not allowed to eat a lot of food. And in Srebrenica, he said, if only there was an onion for me to eat, I would eat it on its own, but there was none. There was nothing for my son.
And I heard from Zvijezda, from where my son [Edin] died, you know, from Zvijezda, a Serb shouts to us, he says, leave Srebrenica you "balije" [derogatory word for Muslim] you will leave it sooner or later . . . . Fine, I said to my husband. Have you heard Ramo, he said, we shall all die. For 15 days we were expelled . . . .
