Organization
Mission: To advance the understanding of the visual arts and to impart knowledge about them by collecting, preserving, exhibiting and interpreting works of art. The ArtScene program seeks to achieve this mission with high school students by offering a variety of art experiences based on traveling exhibitions and work from the permanent collection of the Hunter.
Founder: The ArtScene program is planned and implemented by: Nan Swanson, M.Ed. in Art, Studio Education Coordinator of Hunter Museum of American Art
Founded: 1976
Vision: To serve as a contact source between high school students and post-secondary institutions which offer programs of visual art study. Planning is underway to establish an annual scholarship for high school graduating seniors planning to major in a field of visual art at college/university level.

Program
Programs: The ArtScene program offers monthly studio workshops, monthly drawing classes, monthly ArtScene Council meetings, and an annual, juried exhibition of student work. Fall 2001 will include an art school/college fair for students of participating ArtScene high schools.
Gender Specific: No
Prerequisites: The art instructors of each participating school select two art students to serve as representatives to the ArtScene Council. As representatives, these students act as a liaison between the museum and their school to advertise workshops and museum events and register fellow art students to participate. Instructors are encouraged to select students who are eager, responsible and have demonstrated a desire to further their art education. The only limitation for participation is geographic proximity to the museum. Students provide their own transportation.
