The best paintings, he says, teach us about life and celebrate humanity. The Met is packed with these types of works. A "Portait of Juan De Pareja" (c. 1650) by Diego Velazquez, for example, goes far beyond a simple likeness and draws the viewer into the life of its subject. "It's not just a painting," he says. "It's the ultimate!"
