Ethel Waters: Sweet Mama Stringbean
Depending on your age and generation, Ethel Waters is hearaled as a Hollywood icon but also forgotten for all of her accomplishments. Her Autobiography, His Eye Is On The Sparrow, does not tell her epic journey from Chester, PA to Hollywood and Europe. The Museum of Television fills in some of her life with the series, At home With Ethel Waters, but her Billy Graham years are not included in the footage. I was allowed to visit Francis Ford Coppola’s library to research her influence on his movie, Cotton Club. Still with all of the One Act shows, my Castro Theatre Tribute to Ethel, Crystal Waters family ties and mine from east coast relatives geneolgy search, this gifted child of rape deserves to have her name traced as far as oral and documented history will allow. Her Hollywood success deserves one of the posthumous awards which I will lobby for endlessly.
