Related to Frederick Douglass via Anna Murray?
I was an adopted child who found her biological mother and father in 1989. I met my father Steven Andrew Murray in 1990 but I did not meet my mother Estelle Fisher Grimes until 2011…but I talked with her over the phone and via letters since 1989. My mother and father were never married to each other. They were married to other people at the time I was conceived…the reason I was adopted. Anyway, my father was one of 13 siblings born to George Henry Murray and Margarett Ellen Edelen Murray in Denton, MD. My father was the 7th child born August 31, 1917. My aunts told me that we were related to Frederick Douglass. They told me that my Great Grandfather George Henry Murray who was born in May, 1888 was the brother of Anna Murray, Frederick Douglass’ first wife, who according to history books was also from Denton, MD. I did some research and found that my GG Grandmother Mary C. Murray had 7 children, and two died before the 1900′s…it did not list the two that were deceased names. Her children were: John T. Murray, George H. Murray, Sarah H. Murray, James W. Murray and Oscar P. Murray. I know that my GG Grandmother owned her land free and clear in the 1900′s…it shows that she was a widow but I cannot find out who she was married to or when he or she died. There are aunts that say there were two sets of Murray’s in Denton and that they don’t know if we are related to the Douglass’. I would like to know for sure…and don’t want to pass along false information to my children. I would like to know who my GG Grandfather was and what happened to my Grandfather’s siblings children and if any are still around…I am sure there must be cousins out there, even in neighboring cities and states…It has been said that my GG Grandmother was left land by her master and that this was who she had her children by and that’s why I can not find out who it is…I need to verify this also…I know there was land, and have found a deed but it is from my grandmother leaving it to my father and his siblings…I have not located the other land that was deeded to my GG Grandmother yet…i am still researching the Murray/Douglass connection so if anyone has any information please send it to me..it would be greatly appreciated. My GG Grandmother Mary C. Murray was bon in 1845 in Maryland. My father’s siblings are: Agnes, James, Sherman, David, Issac, Catherine, Pearl, Rosetta, Samuel, Thelma, Harry and George who died in 1909 a year after he was born (he was born before Agnes). The only ones still living now are my Aunt Catherine who is 96 years old and my Aunt Thelma who is 86 years old. My father died at age 90 in 2008.
