Vinkler, Winkler, Kubacak
Upon delving into my family tree I have hit dead ends and mysteries. My paternal grandmothers maiden name was Kubacak which is Czech but on immigration papers they claimed they were Moravian. This puzzled me until I found that in the region that is now the Czech Republic there is a sub region Moravia. These people look at themselves as culturally if not ethnically different than there neighbors. Then I found another puzzler my paternal grandmother’s mother’s maiden name was Winkler. So it could be that I have Jewish ancestry. And one generation before Winkler was spelled Vinkler. And to cap it all off they immigrated directly into Texas during the 1850s making finding records incredibly difficult.
